Nokia Networks Technology Center in Kraków is responsible for creating new solutions for 3G and 4G mobile networks products, dedicated for customers all over the world. 


In the Kraków center we’re highly focused on radio base stations responsible for direct communication with mobile phones, but also on the further part of mobile networks.

Tasks requested to the radio base station are:

  • Shortening the time amount needed for accepting and servicing of the next  customer report given to services providing by the mobile network as much as possible,

  • Assuring users’ greatest mobility in a way unnoticeable for them and assuring high quality of our services,

  • Service of growing data traffic being transmitted between users or services, by the use of smart phones,

  • Assuring the maximal throughput of data traffic for every serviced connection,

  • Constant enlarging of system capacity, so to increase the number of simultaneously serviced connections  via one base station,

  • Reliability and ease of usage of the system working in, so called, ‘real time’ environment,

  • Resistance for adverse weather conditions such as high or low temperature,

  • Decreasing the weight, size and power usage.

Technical complexity of the issues above requires both field knowledge and appropriate working time management.

Projects conducted currently are based on 3GPP LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard with applicable amplifications for solutions of the “Advanced” type, so called, LTE Advanced, in both access technology in the field of frequency - FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) and time - TDD (Time Division Duplex).

“Advanced” type solutions:

  • Carrier Aggregation – transmission, in which the disjoint data is transmitted to the user via different frequencies not discontiguous with each other,

  • Advanced MIMO – multiplexing the number of transmitting and receiving aerials, for both, the base station and the telephone,

  • GoMP +elCIC – advanced techniques of dynamic coordination of transmittance and reception with the usage of couple of base stations, counting the coordination of mutual interference.

They require full engagement of all domain teams existing in our center from the very beginning, that means product’s requirements specifications or the functionality, by its implementation, tests together with the start up at the customer.

In connection with the 3GPP LTE standard changes, next amplifications are planned in the nearest future, they will introduce:

  • AAS – active aerials with directing power streams only in the users direction, so called Beamforming,

  • Increasing the amount of Carrier Aggregation to get beams of 100MHz and more,

  • Introducing cooperation between LTE and WiFi with the possibility to share user data between both technologies,

  • Dual Connectivity – introducing the possibility to increase the throughput of data transmission thanks to simultaneous phone connection to two or more base stations (effective utilization of radio resources). 

Nokia Center in Kraków is also involved in 5G mobile telephony projects. 5G is in the induction phase of defining the vision, simulation and implementation and testing the approved prototypes.
